Travelling to the EU countries for British citizens after Brexit
The European Commission confirmed that UK citizens will not need a visa to enter EU countries after Brexit. However, they will need to obtain ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) entry document, which costs € 7 (£ 6.30). It is expected that this system will be launched in 2021.
ETIAS is an entry document that allows citizens from 61 countries, including the United States, Japan and Australia, to travel around the European Union without a visa for up to 90 days for business, tourist, medical or transit purposes. Applications for ETIAS entry document are made online. The submission process is quick and should not cause any difficulties. Applicants will need passport details, as well as information on previous convictions and any medical conditions. According to EU officials, most applicants receive a decision within a few minutes with more than 95% of applications approved automatically. Some applications may take up to four weeks to be processed. In some cases, applications may be rejected. ETIAS entry document is issued for a period of three years and allows multiple entry to EU countries. The document will be checked by border guards at the EU port of entry. It is not yet known what rules will apply to EU tourists coming to the UK, but both sides are eager to provide visa-free regime for short term visits.
